Three words can adequately describe Dead Space : Science Fiction Horror. And this game is an example of this genre at it's finest.
This game is a Third-person Shooter much like the Resident Evil series, this this is no clone made Sci-fi, and it's not based in any other known Intellectual Property (Already established franchise, like Halo and such). Dead Space takes place on the massive mining ship, the USG Ishimura, a planet-cracker class ship (type of mining ship that pretty much rips off a chunk of a planet to mine) that has recently fallen silent, and a small repair crew aboard the USG Kellion arrive, with engineer Isaac Clarke, the main character you play as, stumbling around the be-stricken ship as he finds that something is very wrong.
What has basically happened is that the entire crew of the Ishimura has been taken over by a truly terrifying alien parasite known as the Necromorphs, who use dead organic tissue to make repulsive and increasingly deadly forms.

I think this link emulates Dead Space Perfectly, this game has top notch sound and graphics, and copious amounts of gore as is according to the genre. Ask me more if you wish.
Oh, and i do mean LOTS of gore mind you.

when that game came out, my bro wuz always like "don't look!! it's so scary it'll make ppl crap their pants!"...
but i watched anywayz, and that game wusn't rly scary...' w '

It's all about the experience, sure it's not as scary when you're watching someone, but when you're the one playing, it tends to be much scarier in a lot of small ways. Unless of course you just happen to be desensitized to horror in general. I wouldn't know.
